It was bound to happen. A co-worker bought a used Deere 4200 with a 60" midmount mower last fall that he uses on his own property and does some limited custom work. He and I have had some spirited discussions over the past year and a half regarding the axle scuffing issue. He didn't think the problem was as bad as I did so he didn't pursue the axle replacement. He called me yesterday to tell me he priced a trade on a new 4400 with a 72" mower. The dealer offered him $1000 less for the 4200 because it had the old axle. The dealer said customers are beginning to ask for tractors with the new axle design. He now wants to pursue the new axle replacement rather than trade for the 4400. It sounds like the dealer is going to help him get the axle. What a mess. Its hard for me to believe that some dealers continue to claim they have never heard of the axle problem. When I was talking with a NewHolland dealer about a trade on a Boomer he asked me if I had trouble with tearing the turf when I mowed. If Deere's competition is aware of the scuffing problem, and their own dealers don't, it sounds like they have more problems than just poor quality control.

I am trying to get the front axle on my JD4300 replaced. The dealer tells me that there is a huge backlog on the new axle kit and could not give me a date for replacement. He said I was on the waiting list. Anyone else hear this?

Yes, I just got notified that my unit can go in on Wed. I have waited since Jan. of this year for the upgrade. Hope you don't have to wait as long. good luck. ....

be careful on the replacement of axle, as the dash assy has to come apart. They give the dealer 5 hours and I put the unit on myself and it took 10-11 hours. I didn't hurry. The new front is great. There is a backlog on the units and I guarantee if you sold your tractor with the old front you'd be docked. ....

Do I understand correctly that the 4100 is not included in the replacement axle program? I have a 4100 and haven't noticed any excessive turf scuffing with R4's. Does the 4100 not have the problem or is Deere not including it in the axle replacement program for some other reason? ....

Andy--the 4100's do not have the lawn-scuffing problem. The 4100's were made in Japan by Yanmar whereas the 4200+ were manufactured in the U.S. by John Deere. Mike S. ....

As Mike S. said, the 4100 is made by Yanmar of Japan, and 4200 through 4700 is made here in the USA and IMHO that is John Deere's BIG mistake. They should have left the compacts to Yanmar and if they had we wouldn't be bothered with all these problems. David ....

With all due respect to the other post'rs, a "few" of the 4100's do have minor scuff problems. Obviously this problem seems to be non-existant in comparison to the 4200's and up. The problem specifically is an improperly bent tie-rod. Rather than fabricating a tie-rod with adjustment settings, they simply use a solid welded rod. This is all wonderful until someone at the plant realizes its break time in the middle of making the rod. In my case, the rod was so poorly made, it caused about 2" of toe-in. All is well now... finally.. ....
